Following a two-week closure caused by the sudden collapse of 1/3 of its café ceiling, The Providence Black Repertory Company will host a Re-Opening Celebration on Friday, January 11th beginning at 5 p.m. until closing.
Black Rep artists, friends, and staff will come together for an evening celebrating the organization’s award-winning Theater, Education, and Public Programs. The cost of admission is a tax deductible $15 – but those of us who have shallower pockets should know any donation would be well received, so just give what you can.
The Black Rep has suffered a loss of more than $25,000 of revenue from the sudden closure. In addition, insurance will not pay for all of the expenses involved in the repair and cleaning.
5 to 7 p.m. is a cocktail hour for supporters: network with the businesses, organizations, and people that have partnered with, and supported, the Black Rep.
7 to 9 p.m. will feature a showcase of artist performances from theater, poetry, and public programs. Fresh from a recent appearance on BET’s “106 and Park”, Black Rep host, Chachi Carvalho, will be the Master of Ceremonies for impromptu Theater, African Drumming, Poetry, Hip Hop performances, and more.
7 p.m. to Close the Black Rep will also be celebrating the re-launch of Afro-sonic: DJs Mikedelick and Blackdove (Don King!!) with live drumming by resident drummer Sidy Mäiga.
“Since 1996, the Black Rep has contributed to the development of artists, youth arts education, and the cultural literacy of its community by offering widely accessible, free and low-cost programming inspired by the cultural traditions of the African Diaspora,” says Donald W. King, artistic/executive director.
“We pride ourselves in our mission and our commitment to the artists that have made this venue their home, and an indelible part of Providence’s cultural scene,” he continued, “Now its time to give thanks and bring our artists back home!”
