Summer’s gone — that much is certain. Sure it’s still warm out, and the sun’s shining a lot — but everyone knows it’s over. No one’s even thinking about throwing another party. And as for a barbeque? Forget it. When you feel that first bite of fall in the air, you’ve gotta let the summer go. But Wade McTaggert, of Jacksonville High School fame, isn’t buying it.

You think Wade’s gonna let summer just act like a fuckin’ pussy and scamper away? Oh hell no.

So there he is. By the cafeteria dumpsters with his summer hook-up. What’s her name again? Alicia, Heather, Katie, Becky? Fuck, it doesn’t matter — she’s letting him shove his hand up her shirt. The thing about this girl, though, is that Wade knows he’s in over his head. Sure they had made out by the quarry and over at J.P.’s place and a few other times at random parties throughout the summer, but basically, she’s way too hot for him. He’s known all along that once school starts, BOOM. See ya, Wade.

But that’s fine by him. Cause getting a few last gropes right now is all he needs to get him through senior year. And her friends aren’t around so she’s gettin’ into it too. Wade moves his hand to the waist of her low-rise jeans and begins a slow descent.

And then, “RIIIING!” The goddamn first period bell. Wade freezes.

She tenses up. She takes her tongue out of his mouth and says, “Wade. School’s starting.”

Fucking great. His right hand is inches from the promised land. She pushes back from Wade and stares right at him. It’s the first time they’ve locked eyes in the past three months.

Her mouth opens slightly. There’s a glint in her eye. She grabs Wade’s denim jacket, pulls him close, and throws her right leg over his shoulder. Her lips brush his ear. “Let’s do this.”

The Providence Kickball League Postseason has begun.
